Update:

OU received their most recent verbal with Geneo Grissom choosing the Sooners. Grissom left KU after the firing of Mark Mangino and had been looking at LSU, OU, and KU. Grissom provides the Sooners with a very athletic pass rushing DE to compliment Chuka Ndulue. Finally, Grissom is a nice addition in case as expected Jackson Jeffcoat chooses UT.

Speaking of Jackson Jeffcoat (6-4,230 DE Plano, TX) his official visit to OU is finally here and this is OU's last shot to convince him to be a Sooner. With the loss of Ken Norton Jr to Seattle, USC has fallen off the radar for Jeffcoat putting UT allegedly as the clear favorite. I say allegedly because Jeffcoat has never once gone on the record as a favorite, or told a fellow recruit on a recruiting trip, or a teammate at an all star game which school is his favorite. Now, Chris Wilson's departure from OU to Miss State to be their Defensive Coordinator has opened up a spot on the OU staff for Jackson's dad Jim Jeffcoat (ex Dallas Cowboy and current Houston defensive coach). It's unclear if Jim is interested in OU at this time (both OU and Jim wanting to avoid any hint of impropriety that Jim and Jackson are a package deal, or Jim not wanting to coach against his son if he attends UT) or if Bob is thinking about interviewing Jim Jeffcoat. Nothing has happened one way or the other as of Jackson visiting this weekend. Jackson appears to be scheduled to make a decision on local TV 1/31. I'd love to think that OU can pull a huge upset this weekend. Usually, OU getting the last visit before a decision would give me a positive feeling. But, I think UT's big season might have put them over the top with Jackson. Maybe, some positive news will come out of this weekend for the Sooners. It's unclear whether OU likes their chances with Jackson or is simply going through the final steps in recruiting this elite 5 star talent. A potential wildcard in Jackson's recruiting is the fact that his sister Jacqueline has signed to play for Sherri Coale at OU. In the rare interview given by Jackson or his dad, they profess that his sister's choice of OU won't be a factor but you have to wonder if it might help OU at decision time.

The other visitor this weekend is kind of a surprise in Corey Nelson LB 6-0, 215, 4.5 Dallas Skyline. Nelson has been verbaled to ATM since this Summer. That verbal was a little bit of a surprise but ATM sold Nelson on instant playing time. Now, Nelson has been rumored to be looking around all fall and I'm sure ATM's horrible defensive performance in the bowl game didn't help. Skyline recruits lately have been verbaling early and then reconsidering late (OU's verbal Steve Williams last year to Cal, Mike Davis from LSU to UT). Will Nelson follow that trend? At one point earlier in the year, Nelson clearly talked about OU leading so this visit is not out of left field completely. I have to wonder if OU were to get Nelson's verbal (and he would be OU's highest rated LB recruit by a wide margin) if OU would need to create a ship? OU's lost Eddrick Loften already, I just wonder if OU will take 4 LBs. Don't be surprised to hear about an OU verbal taking a visit somewhere this weekend or next if OU gets Nelson/likes their chances with Jeffcoat. I'll be honest Nelson's senior year footage is not as good as his junior year where he's just dominating on the field.

Barring any other surprises/late visitors, the only other recruits in play are two OL prospects.

John Cullen JUCO OL 6-6, 285- August enrollee. The USC/Tenn coaching madness has gotten Cullen to drop Tenn and pickup USC as an option. OU and Utah have been constants, but I think USC is probably going to end up winning the battle for this west coast star (USC recently lost JUCO OT Brice Schwab to ASU).

Damien Robinson OL 6-8, 330. Miss. Robinson visited OU back in December. He would be a great addition to the class adding depth at OT. Tenn was in play for him before the coaching change. Still it's likely that Ole Miss gets Robinson if I had to guess.

OU's early enrollments on campus ready for winter conditioning and springball are

  • Bronson Irwin OG 6-5, 310
  • Austin Woods OC 6-5, 290
  • Sheldon McClain WR 6-2, 185,
  • Tony Jefferson DB 6-0, 195
  • Kenny Stills WR 6-1, 180
