OU has recently received two more football recruiting verbals from Southmoore teammates Austin Haywood and Kendal Thompson.
Austin Haywood (6-5, 250, 4.8 TE/DE Southmoore, OK) is classic recruiting reason why you make sure to have a couple of ships left around for Seniors that finally develop. Haywood has been just dominating at TE for Southmoore, and in addition even plays some Wildcat formation QB, and is dominating at DE as well. With OU badly needing additional depth, talent, and competition at TE for next year, the Sooners have been offering TEs from Nevada, Georgia, Mississippi, and California. In a really weak class for TEs, OU had found no takers. It looked like after getting Trey Millard Hback/FB from Missouri that OU would just wait on TE until next year when the TE class is hopefully better. However, the inability for James Hanna to find the field, and what the elimination of a TE game has done to the Sooner offense, had to leave the Sooner coaches very concerned. They have Lane Johnson/Gabe Ikard to fill the role of 2nd TE (and both kids probably have more receiving skills than Brody), but do not have that down the field TE threat that Jermaine gave the OU offense. Well looking at his most recent Rivals highlight video. Haywood provides that threat and then some. The rumor mongering on Haywood is going to be a constant message board fight on whether he can get eligible or not. From recent interviews, it sounds like Haywood has things going in the right direction.
Kendal Thompson (6-2, 180, 4.65 QB Southmoore, OK). So yes Kendal is the son of former OU QB Charles Thompson, and if CT's actions in the 80s still leave a bad feeling don't hold it against his very talented son, Kendal. OU is clearly mixing up some of their recruiting strategies, Heupel previously had been waiting until about April to identify and offer one QB, give that kid a chance to verbal then move on. That's what OU did with Landry Jones, and OU offered both Connor Wood and Blake Bell, and got Blake Bell. One thing is clear though, if you want to be offered by Coach Heupel. He wants you in OU's summer camp. Now OU offered Kendal much earlier but he was a standout as a rising junior at OU's summer camps at QB. Locking down Thompson gives OU good QB depth now that it's relatively clear that Landry Jones is going to be the QB for the 2 next year at least barring some injury or calamity. Thompson and Blake Bell are interesting QB offers in that both kids bring a serious element of QB run game to the picture. Both QBs are very good passers, but clearly have that ability to make something out of nothing and pick up 6 or 7 garbage yards and move the sticks. But Kendal is not a "running' QB, he excels throwing the ball. In fact, his most recent Rivals video, Kendal as a lefty kind of reminds me of Pat White. He's very accurate and shows good touch.
Kendal's verbal means that OU has two verbals already for the class of 2011
Kendal Thompson and Kameel Jackson WR (6-2, 190, 4.5 OU coaches think he might be the best WR in Texas)

I think it's time to start playing the "who won't qualify, who will end up signing elsewhere", etc. game. Any ideas? Also, it looks like OU is going to sign 28 or 29 guys by my calcuation. Am I in the ballpark?
