2011 Recruiting Update: 2/28

OU Verbals

  1. Kameel Jackson 6-2, 195, 4.45 WR Arlington,TX
  2. Kendal Thompson 6-2, 180, 4.6 QB Southmoore, OK
  3. Chris Barnett  6-6, 240, 46 TE Euless, TX
  4. Wade Turner 6-4, 290, 5.0 DT Round Rock, TX
  5. P.L. Lindley 6-3, 210, 4.5 LB  Round Rock, TX

Well UT's second recruiting weekend is over and really there's only one piece of news.

Garrett Greenlea a key OU OT recruit who appeared close to verbaling to OU, instead got the UT offer he was waiting on. Greenlea at 6-7, 290 was one of the top three OTs on the OU recruit board along with Matt Hegarty from NM (6-5, 270) and Brey Cook from ARK (6-7, 300). It's pretty disappointing that OU did not lock down Greenlea last weekend. I'm sure that OU will try to get one more visit out of Greenlea this coming weekend. But Mack has probably issued his threat about losing his offer if he visits OU.  There's not really another big OT in Texas that OU really likes right now, although OU could focus their attention to Spencer Drago (6-6, 280) who would be the next ranked OT in Texas.

UT is at 17 scholarships, and they have done their usual job of loading up on in state players who want to be Horns, and hard sell recruiting on a bunch of other kids.  It's like clockwork, a well scripted operation. Nothing has really changed about how well UT recruits. The only thing that's really changed is how early UT is getting all their verbals, so it just amplifies the impact on message board Chicken Littles who just don't understand recruiting at all, especially OU recruiting or UT recruiting.

UT has a very good class (what else is new, Mack's never had a low ranked class at UT).  At this point though, UT only really has 3 players that OU deemed key. I'm not saying that UT only has 3 very good verbals, but some of the players OU never expressed any interest in.

  • Desmond Jackson DT
  • Steve Edmond LB
  • Garrett Greenlea

OU can absorb the loss of Edmond if they are able to land Anthony Wallace MLB from Dallas Skyline. Wallace and Edmond are 1a and 1b in terms of LB ranking in Texas. OU if they can land at least one of Cook or Hegarty that would counter the recruiting loss of Greenlea.

Desmond Jackson? Right now there's not an elite 3 technique DT on OU's recruiting board, although there's some thought that Nathan Hughes (6-5, 245) or Cedric Reed (6-5, 255) could outgrow the DE and become that fast DT.  It's hard to know what OU has in Turner without seeing some film of him as a junior.  OU appears to have identified a potential 1 gap/NG prospect in Dallas Kimball DT Isiah Norton (6-5, 300).

OU has a second junior weekend coming up, and the big name visiting is Trey Metoyer the number one ranked WR in Texas. Metoyer at 6-2, 200, 4.45 is an elite WR that would be a great addition for OU. Metoyer is going to end up being an all star game invitee. Metoyer is rumored to have OU out in front.

OU has just started to send out more national offers. Last year, OU's national recruiting efforts were key in OU having a great class. It's a little early to know who OU will target nationally. I anticipate some level of Florida/Georgia recruiting to take advantage of new defensive backs coach Willie Martinez's connection in those two areas. In addition, OU will likely target some kids in California especially San Diego to continue building a new pipeline.

The mortgage loans suppose to be important for guys, which would like to organize their own business. As a fact, that's comfortable to get a sba loan.

Or perhaps those kids never expressed an interest in OU? Flowers, Evans, shipley and Scott to name a few. Do you guys deem Reed key? I'm disappointed that you guys appear to lead for Wallace as he is a good one.

Groundhog Day,

There will always be players that UT offers that OU won't and players that OU offers that UT won't. I think Atlanta has done an excellent job of remaining objective and honest in his analysis of recruits. Believe it or not, OU doesn't want every player that commits to UT smilies/smiley.gif

I don't disagree with that SSD. I'm sure you guys don't care about Moss, Thompson, doyle, Ash, etc. I was merely pointing out the elite of the bluechippers and everyone agrees that Flowers, Evans, Scott, and Shipley are the bluest of the blues that Atlanta didn't mention. Malcolm Brown, Aaron Green, Brandon Williams, and Anthony Wallace are a part of this group as well.
