Nebraska Game - Total Trainwreck
Written by atlantasooner

I felt like calling this a review would be criminally unfair.

Positives:

Defense. Just about every facet of it. In reality, it gave up 3 points. NU's offense is awful, and OU kept them awful.

Negatives:

The defense with NU in a total offensive shell was unable to score 7 points. Hard to call that a negative, but it was probably the only way OU was going to score a TD last night.

Absolute Total Trainwreck:

Offensive play calling. OU had a huge opportunity to jump on NU early but started tentative and conservative. It went downhill from there. 7 drives inside the NU 30. 3 points.

Offensive line play: in the first half the OL got completely dominated. Not a huge surprise, NU's front four is the only elite thing about Nebraska. No running lanes again. Add in some driving killing penalties. Corey Brandon obviously has suffered some kind of head injury that does not permit him to understand the concept of the snap count.

Wide Receiver play: Adron Tennell regressed completely back to the unreliable, not fighting for catches WR that got benched for 3 games after BYU. Broyles and Miller with Caleb hurt were about it at WR.

Quarterback play: You have to wonder at what point Heupel/Stoops thought about pulling the redshirt off Drew Allen last night. Landry was consistently missing WRs high, behind. You name it. Now sure the OL struggled, but even when Landry had time, he was horrible. The INTs were the worst part. Drive killers being the worst part. All Landry had to was to not give NU easy points, and he did exactly that. Easily the worst QB effort of the Stoops era surpassing Bomar against UT in 2005 where he was throwing lawn darts at garden gnomes, and Hybl against OSU in 2001 where he missed open WRs again and again. But neither of those guys threw 5 Ints.

Field Goal kicking: everyone in college football has a better field goal kicking game than OU. Two years of beyond awful FG game. It was amusing last year when we scoring 60 a game, this year it's costing us football games.  We are probably going to see a return to Stevens, who cannot hit long FGs either.

A new list of what should happen but won't

1. Open tryouts for kicker.  Paging Kathy Ireland

2. Drew Allen's redshirt is done. This spring Landry looked pretty average, some folks even thinking Drew Allen outplayed him. The biggest concern right now is Landry's accuracy and decision making. He should not be making those kind of mistakes this late in the season. Unless you want to guarantee the ascendancy of Landry for the next 3 years, you have to get Allen into a game this year.  Bob is strict adherent to playing the most veteran QB. We have QB recruits coming burning Allen's redshirt is my opinion is less of an issue with Bell and Thompson verballed.

3. Pull Wilson's playcalling responsibilities. Wilson in every loss is clearly placing the blame on his playcalling and not getting it done. Enough is enough, time to figure out if Norvell or Heupel can be the OC, before you go shopping for a new one. The OL is a total mess. Patton is clearly not getting it done. Demote Wilson to focus on trying to coach up this mess, and find out what might be salvageable talent wise for next year.

Totally agree. . .

. . .with what should happen but won't. Stoops will defend Wilson and Patton and remind us that we don't know what we're talking about because we're not D1 coaches.

Under what should happen I'd like to see us go back to a huddle. I really think it would minimize mistakes and improve execution. We use the clock anyway we just stand at the LOS waiting for the signal from the sideline.
If we have even an average place kicker...

...we win that game. I can understand Landry throwing out a clunker all things considered, but I can't understand how a program with OU's stature can't have a frigging competent field goal kicker.

I agree with a couple of your points but not all.
1. This would have been a great year to go Tressel-ball on folks. For this style of play to be successful, there must be excellence in both the defense and kicking game. The FG unit has been awful and cost OU the BYU, Nebraska, and maybe Texas games.
2. I don't agree with bashing Kevin Wilson's playcalling but do agree he and Patton get heat for the ridiculous OL (that has not really progressed that much during the year). Wilson's biggest issue with the offense is inconsistency. He doesn't know which unit will take the day off, OL, WRs, or, last night, QB. Jones could have had more than 5 INTs last night (at least 2 others were close). Wilson is really hamstrung with an OL that can pass block some (Neb was in Jones face but not every play and not as bad as the Miami or maybe even Texas game), can run block none, and WRs that are equally undisciplined. I haven't minded the playcalling that much realizing the limitations of this offensive team. Wilson, Patton, and Norvell have not been able to instill urgency into these players.

It pains me to say this as a proud OU alum and diehard fan, but this team sucks. What really breaks my heart is that if we had last year's O with this year's D either last year or this year, we win #8.

Stephen Good got his ass kicked on at least 50% of the plays, Trent Williams has had a tremendous regression this season, Cory Brandon should never step foot on a football field again, Ben Habern may eventually be a pretty good center, but he's too young at the moment, Tyler Evans has shown promise, Jarvis Jones has shit for brains, Brody Eldridge has played his ass off every freaking play and is the MVP of the offense this season... I could go on forever about this. This offensive line SUCKS. This is, without question, the worst offensive line in the Stoops era and I'm not sure it's going to get better next year.

Ryan Broyles is a stud and Dejuan Miller is a game-breaker in the making. Both of these guys are going to be outstanding next year, and if Broyles stays two more seasons, watching these two guys two years from now will be scary, assuming we get a OLine, a decent TE, an above average running game, and a QB. I'm willing to give Landry the benefit of the doubt because of how young he is, but Drew Allen better get ready to play, that's for damn sure.

I can't imagine being a defensive player on this team. They played their asses off yesterday and have done so each and every week. Even giving up 21 to Miami didn't cost us the game.

What a strange season... everyone is calling for Wilson's head and is heaping praise on Venebles! I will say that it's most likely time for James Patton to go. We know what the guy can do with superior talent, but it's now crystal clear what he does with below talent. I'm not convinced this guy can take below-average talent and turn them into average players or turn great players into elite players. It seems the studs we've had on the Oline over the past few seasons have been studs despite Patton. By the way, what the hell is up with all of the injuries this season?! Is something wrong with the strength and conditioning program?

I can't tell if Chris Brown has lost a step or if the OLine is really just that bad. Demarco looks exceptionally strong right now, but he's not getting help from anyone.

Finally, what the F*** is up with our kicking game?! This is awful, just awful. Stevens sucks, Moreland sucks, and we haven't had a solid kicking game since Hartley left. If we were podunk U I'd understand, but how does the University of Oklahoma have trouble attracting a top kicker for two consecutive years? I know this sounds pathetic, but we do need to have an open try out for kicker. It worked for Tech, maybe it will work for us.

Last year (and earlier this) I was calling for Brent Vulnerables to be gone. He has earned the right to stay alittle longer. Kevin (Northwestern) Wilson has earned the right to go back to NW. Against Kansas, 3 consecutive QB sneaks on the goal line. I call that the 'Staples' offense 'That was stupid!' Throwing one of your guys with the biggest heart into a no-win situation, ala Brody Eldridge v. Suh. Eldridge didn't stand a chance against a guy who outweighed him by 35 lbs. 'That was Stupid!' When the players continue to make mental mistakes at this point in the season that they should have moved past after game one (See any false start/personal foul/holding penalty called against the O line since BYU. 'That was Stupid Coaching!' I recommend a Fraud Against the Government investigation be launched, as Kevin Wilson is receiving money from OU for no apparent reason.

rundl32,
Totally agree that Stoops will not act and refuse to admit to any problems. That is the problem! We will once again hear how stupid we are and that we don't understand what goes on. He will talk about how both teams played hard and that NU just out executed us on a few key plays blah blah blah d fucking blah!! I may not be a D1 coach but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express and I have watched a lot of College football. This team has serious problems and this is the most discouraged I have been since Stoops got here. That looked like John Blake football out there on offense and special teams! I am sick of personal foul penalties on the OL, I am sick of missed field goals, and I am sick of watching this same shit week after week! This team has not beat one good team this year. If Landry Jones continues to make the same mistakes he is making, we might not win another game this year.

Speaking of Brody Eldridge, that guy is now one of my favorite Sooners of all time and I hope he makes a shit ton of money in the NFL. That guy never complains, is one of the few guys that literally goes 100% each and every play, and is never in trouble off the field. He just does everything right and plays his ass off and does whatever is asked of him. Suh may weigh 35 pounds more than him, but Suh is an animal like none other. Don't look know folks, but we're really going to miss that guy next year. So sad that Eldridge is done for the year. So fucking sad...

Any idea what his draft status is like? He's going to get drafted somewhere. That guy can block as well as anyone I've ever seen in college football over the last 5-10 years.
